The best face masks for exercise protection are the ones that fit snugly against your face and provide a good seal. These can help prevent sweat from escaping and keeping you cool, while also protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
The breathable face mask for summer is a type of mask that is designed to keep the wearer’s skin and lungs safe from harmful effects of pollution.
Indoor gyms and fitness centers are open, but with increased worries about the delta variant, the issue of wearing protective face masks while exercising is heating up. Gym-goers will need to select a face mask that doesn’t restrict breathing too much or make them sweat excessively.
“Whether you are exercising or not, wearing masks in public should be observed for the goal of safeguarding others in case you are a carrier,” says Suzanne Lukovics, physical therapy director at Georgetown Living Home Health in Austin, Texas. While mask laws differ by state, the dangers of transmission while exercise remain unknown, she adds, so Lukovics, like the rest of the public, depends on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health agencies for guidance.
“There has been some discussion regarding droplets held in air for a length of time, but we must keep in mind that Covid-19 exposure seems to be strongly linked to ‘viral load,’” she adds. “Things like being exposed to air droplets with Covid-19 would be less problematic if you were, say, jogging past a location where droplets were present rather than working out hard for 45 minutes next to someone who may be carrying Covid-19 and is talking loudly, coughing, or breathing hard during their workout next to you.”
For the record, Lukovics claims she would wear a mask while jogging 3 kilometers with a friend outside. And, according to the physical therapist, masks may make it difficult to breathe. “Your body’s need for oxygen rises when you workout to sustain your muscles.”
However, the impact on a person’s respiratory rate is subjective. “Even without a mask, an old person who has never exercised will get winded with very little activity,” she adds. “Anyone who wears a mask during exercise, regardless of intensity, would very certainly feel more breathless than they would without one – even if it’s a light, disposable mask.”
It is, however, worth it, according to Lukovics. “With each encounter of wearing a mask while exercising, our wonderful bodies will adapt and we will seem less breathless,” she adds. “We should do it for the larger long-term benefit if we have the option to avoid the spread and ‘endure’ a bit of a tougher exercise for our lungs.”
Wearing a mask, regardless of its protective effectiveness, “can give a visual signal to others that ‘I care about you, and am ready to put up with some pain’ during this unprecedented time,” Lukovics adds. And, for a change, when we can safely exercise without a mask again, our exercises will feel easier!”
“Cotton is preferred, mostly for absorbing moisture/sweat,” Lukovics explains of the most breathable mask. Multiple layers may be more protective, but they will reduce breathability, according to her.
